Wandelen over lange afstandspad 3 van west naar oost

Marskramerpad

Het Marskramerpad

The 'Marskraner' path is a long distance hiking trail (LAW 3) in the Netherlands from east to west, starting in the German bordertown Bad Bentheim and finishing in The Haque or more precisely at the North Sea beach resort of Scheveningen.

Marskramer is the Dutch word for peddler or packman and the trail represents the route taken by marskramers from Germany from the 16th century to sell pottery, linen and other merchadise to farmers and citizens of trading cities .

As I live in The Hague I decided to walk the 372 kilometers of the trail in the opposite direction. I will use the 20 stages as my preparation for another trail that I plan to do in more or less one go in the late spring/early summer.

MK17 Rijnsaterwoude to Noorden - 27-Jan-22

On another gray and windy day in January I decided to walk track 17 of the Marskramerpad. I realised that it was good that I decided to walk from west to east as the prevailing winds in the season come from the west so even when it rained a little bit it did

not really bother me.

As with the track 18 that I walked 5 days ago I was re-discovering my

own country and amazed by the amount of waterworks

and watermanagement done to make people live here

                         and run their agricultural businesses!

MK18 Rijnsaterwoude to Leiden

22-Jan-22

To take better advantage of the public transport I did walk this track from east to west. It starts in the middle of what is called the Green Hart of Holland. Flat meadowland with rivers, canals, windmils and lakes. Most of the time walking on quiet roads or cycle tracks but also on tracks in the meadowland with cattle.

The windmills in this area were mostly build to pump the water from the lowlands into the higher ring canal or rivers. In most cases this function is now taken over by electrical pumps.

Before reaching Leiden the trail follows an old branch of the river Rhine that leads into the city with many canals and bridges.

MK19 Wassenaar to Leiden - 19-Jan-22

The first part or the trail took me north to south through the royal estate

the Horsten that is open for walkers during the day. After crossing the

railway through the village of Voorschoten and along the Vliet canal to

Leiden.

Leiden is an old fortified city that holds the oldest university of the country.

An old branch of the river Rhine runs through the city and there are many

canals and old bridges as well as an old fortress in the city center.

The first part of the route to Wassenaar goes through

the 'Haagse Bos' a forestry park very familiar to me

as I walk there regularly for my daily exercises.

The second part runs through many estates that have

been opened for public and is also a favourite area

                              for cyclists and walkers.

Since the Dutch golden ages (16th - 17th century)

nobles and rich have been living in Wassenaar.

MK20 Scheveningen to Wassenaar - 15-Jan-22

The trail starts on the boulevard in Scheveningen just behind the Kurhaus which is an old sanatorium now in use as a luxury hotel.

After leaving the Westbroekpark I even discovered some unknown tracks in the park between Scheveingen and the city center of The Hague. As the house of parliaments complex is being renovated I

did not pass through but stayed on the outside of the pond north of the complex before heading to Wassenaar.
