In 1870 the champagne producing winery was founded by the Tsar's of Russia around the village of Abrau Dyurso.

The area was selected because the climate was similar to the champagne region in France. Experts from France were hired to improve the producing process and select the proper grapes for various types of champagne wine.
Victor Dravigny was the head of the winery from 1905 until 1919 and some of the champagne bottles still bear his name.

Three colleagues from the Novorossiysk office picked me up from he hotel for a visit and tour of the factory. Poor Sergey who was our driver had to watch while we were tasting champagne from 7 different bottles! Tatiana, Svetlana and I each had our own preferences for the various tastes.

After the visit we drove around the lake and over the mountain to a bay on the Black Sea coast before heading back to Novorossiysk.
